Irrespective thereof, the focus of the primes is on production execution rather than salesmanship with Boeing seemingly catching up on the low orders and delivery rates in previous years. Airlines are looking to increase passenger capacities through wide-body orders as overall delivery slots are fewer than actual demand; Boeing is picking up more wide body orders than Airbus. In total, commercial orders added up to USD 84 billion \/ EUR 75 billion.<\/p>\n
The aerospace industry has come to realise that the bottleneck is no longer aircraft demand but it is engine production and aftermarket capacity. In light of this, the engine OEMs have made major commitments to expand manufacturing output and MRO capacity. The FIA was a benchmark year for engine deals: GE will invest USD 1 billion and Safran EUR 1 billion over five years into their CFM International joint venture to increase LEAP production to fulfil the record order backlog which was enhanced by signing new agreements for the delivery of close to 1,800 engines. Top of the list was the blockbuster order by IndiGo, one of the fastest growing carriers, for more than 1,000 LEAP-1A engines. \u00a0Also, CFM is expanding overhaul capability and repair capacity. At the same time Pratt & Whitney is looking to expand the global GTF maintenance network and long-term service agreements as the installed fleet grows.<\/p>\n
New technologies like AI, autonomy and uncrewed systems were being shown, amongst others by BAE Systems, MBDA and Anduril Industries. Military spending, in particular by European countries, is driving the growth of the industry on the back of the various geopolitical tensions and conflicts. in the Gulf region and in Ukraine. Fighter jets are no longer viewed as standalone weapons but are seen in conjunction with autonomous wingman assistance and cloud-connected combat architecture. Strategic priorities in the defence industry have shifted to artificial intelligence, digital engineering, automation and data driven operations. Archer and Anduril unveiled \u201cThunder\u201d, a jointly developed autonomous dual-use hybrid-electric VTOL platform.<\/p>\n
Executives repeatedly emphasised that production capacity and reliable supply chains are the constraining factor in meeting demands. Manufacturers are focusing on supplier resilience, workforce shortages, critical raw materials and manufacturing capacities. Execution and delivery capabilities is now a competitive advantage and strategic differentiator.<\/p>\n
This is becoming more tangible with focus being on deployable technologies rather than ambitious or speculative concepts. Work is continuing on next generation propulsion and UltraFan. Airbus presented its next-generation wing technology, including folding wing concepts. Incremental efficiency improvements are deemed sufficiently important while eVTOLs are focusing on realistic certifications and commercial deployment.<\/p>\n

The FIA 2026 had a very varied flying program with, amongst others, the US Airforce F35A Lightning II Demonstration Team performed impressive high-agility manoeuvres and the RAF Eurofighter Typhoon. Transporters and helicopters, but also commercial aircraft were flying by as well as a heritage Rolls Royce Supermarine Spitfire and a North American P51D Mustang. One of the first significant eVTOL flying appearances was Vertical Aerospace VX4 display, this being in line with the emergence of electric and hybrid aircraft in the flying displays. Worth mentioning is GE\u2019s iconic Boeing 747-400 Flying Test Bed (registration N747GF) as the largest static display; this jumbo jet is primarily based at GE\u2019s Flight Test Operations Center in Victorville, California, but routinely travels nationwide to support engine testing and advanced technology research.<\/p>\n
Overall, FIA 2026 was not centred on civil aircraft sales; value is accruing to delivery slots, lessors, lager aircraft and reliable engines.
